Duncan tells us about a typical day in his role as Property Management Assistant at Highland Residential.
What does an average day in your role look like?
My day starts by checking the out of hours website for an issues whilst I was away from the office and follow up any issues that have occurred. Most days vary after this task since my job is so varied. I could be on site at a property conducting a viewing or inspecting a new potential property to let.
What is the biggest challenge you face in your role?
My greatest challenge I find is ensuring all repairs have been conducted and completed in a timely manner. To combat this, I keep in touch with our tenants to confirm the job has been completed to their satisfaction.
What do you like most about working at Highland Residential?
Team, team, team – all about the team! Everybody knows their role and I contribute with my own to keep the company moving forward. Highland Residential encourage you to challenge the status quo to improve the company’s overall performance.
What skills do you think are important to have to carry out the tasks in your role?
Communication and listening skills are extremely useful in this role. I interact with tenants and contractors everyday and keeping everyone happy is a challenge I enjoy.
What advice would you give someone looking to start a career in Property Management?
Dive straight in with a can-do attitude! If you have an interest in this industry, Property Management is a great way to introduce yourself. I would suggest listening to property podcasts and reading up about the nitty-gritty bits too. Get familiar with Scottish Government Property Law and Leglislation that effects our sector.
Outside of work, how do you spend your free time?
I keep myself fit by going to the gym before work every day and if I’m up extra early I’ll take Dash and Dougal (sausage dogs, #dash_and_dougal) out for a walk too. The weekends are usually spent with friends playing golf / hiking or going for exciting walks in the countryside with the poochies!
